Reds’ bullpen falters again in 3-1 loss to Giants

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija tosses his bat, after breaking it over his knee, following a strikeout against Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Caleb Cotham during the eighth inning of a baseball game, Tuesday, May 3, 2016, in Cincinnati.

It looked like it would be another one of those losing efforts for the Cincinnati Reds after a Brandon Belt home run to lead off the second inning. “Great American “Small” Park got me”.

There was once a thought that the Reds bullpen may not allow a run in this one, thereby ending their Major League Baseball record streak of having allowed a run in 21 consecutive games. He will try to get back on track Monday against the Blue Jays. Back to back doubles by Mac Williamson and Denard Span off Ross Ohlendorf in the Top of the 9th but those dreams in the woodchipper, but mercifully that was all the damage left on the day.

CINCINNATI – The Reds activated left-hander John Lamb off the disabled list on Tuesday to start the second game of a series against the San Francisco Giants, the latest rotation move prompted by injury. “I knew there would be a need at some point”.

“Poor execution”, Peavy said. “I wanted to let the bullpen to be used the way it was designed and not get over worked”.

The three-homer inning was the first of Peavy’s 15-year big career. “I really feel like I settled down and executed pitches after that”. He’d allowed just two in his previous five starts. Zaci Cozart has provided 26 hits and 14 runs, while Eugenio Suarez has five homers with 15 RBI among his 25 hits.

Sergio Romo, also on the D.L. with a flexor tendon strain, stretched out his flat-ground throwing to 90 feet and reported no issues to trainers.

Notes: Billy Hamilton left the game with a jammed left thumb.

Up next: The Giants return home for four against the Colorado Rockies, who will throw Chris Rusin, Chad Bettis and youngsters Jon Gray and Eddie Butler.

Reds: RHP Alfredo Simon (0-3) makes his sixth appearance and fifth start of the season in Thursday’s opener of a four-game series against Milwaukee.
