But he responded promptly two days later, surprising his players and members of the Lilywhites’ staff by announcing in his weekly press conference that he had verbally agreed a two-year contract extension which will keep him in north London until 2021.
The Argentine has stressed that it is an exciting time to be involved with Spurs and that he wants to have the White Hart Lane side competitive on a perennial basis. Pochettino had been asked to explain his comments in France this week about wishing to manage Paris Saint-Germain in the future, when he said: ‘I was captain of PSG and my former manager, who is now on radio, called me and asked some questions. Firstly, at home against Manchester United in which a magical six minute spell in the second-half gave us all three goals.
“I didn’t watch last week but when there is a chance to win the league, like this week, we have all got to watch it and I think we will probably spend the night all together”. This club is special.
He added: “I wasn’t anxious because we have very good heart and I thought sooner or later we’d react”.
“We started to speak before, a few months ago, and today I think is a good moment to communicate we have reached the verbal agreement”, Pochettino said.
Hiddink, who recently met Pochettino at a managers’ meeting, said: “I respect very much the work Mauricio Pochettino is doing in this club and the very calm way, knowing what he’s doing”.
Pochettino’s men face Chelsea on Monday, but Leicester City can confirm a remarkable triumph by winning at Manchester United on Sunday.

“He has a very strong character and personality and for that he is one of the best players in England”, Pochettino told reporters. I expected to stay for some reasons.
