My own mother looked so anxious. In the end my brother and I bought her flowers, a card, and I made her dinner. These things can be as simple as saying “I love you” or sending flowers, because your mother is wonderful. That shouldn’t matter. Remember, she was the one who was there when you were born. 83 percent of moms – including Republicans, Democrats and Independents – said they would likely support a political candidate who is in favor of expanding quality early childhood education. Some differential treatment is inevitable, having to do with the ages of the children; a four-year-old may feel that her infant sister is getting all the attention, for example, and unless the mother actively works to try out to balance out the scale by making sure that her older child has time alone with her, it’s probably going to be true.

Each of us find a different way to honor those special women in our lives who not only gave us life, but for most of us, continue to be our inspiration, shoulder to cry on, hand to hold and loving, undaunted cheerleader. Some women were forced into motherhood and this day is nothing more than a reminder of a hard experience while others may have children who they feel have been nothing but a disgrace to their parenthood. It makes us responsible for our child’s very life. Children still get sick, have vehicle accidents and are prey to people with sinister motives. That is certainly not what my mother would want.
Another country which needs three days to fully acknowledge their mothers and the spirit of family is Serbia, where Mother’s Day takes place in December and is part of a series of holidays including Children’s Day and Father’s Day.
I would like to ask you to take a moment and reflect on how lucky we are to have had our mothers. And this November moms too will be listening, and the candidates with the strongest platforms that invest in kids could gain the most support from mothers at the ballot box. It’s a tremendous responsibility. But, love is not enough; you must feed, dress, rock, change, wash, teach and monitor that child every day for years and years and years. Some have to, some give up a child for the sake of the child but no one really wants to. According to the National Retail Federation, Mother’s Day accounts for one-fourth of the floral purchases made for all holidays. It was such a touching tale of the poor little rich girl and her many losses and accomplishments in life. Mothers are teachers and mentors guiding and advising their sons and daughters through good and bad times. It was nicely done.
