Broadway musical ‘Hamilton’ does what it always does — stuns
The Public also claimed the largest percentage of black actors, owing mostly to its production of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton”, which has since moved to Broadway and, this morning, was nominated for a record-breaking sixteen Tony nominations.

“Hamilton” breaks records with no less than 16 nominations at this year’s Tony Awards, being named for every available category sometimes a few times. History is happening in Manhattan, as this breaks the previous record for the most Tony noms (set in 2001 by The Producers, which had 15 nominations)!
For a complete list of nominations, visit here.
The winners will be announced in a ceremony hosted by James Corden, himself a Broadway veteran and one-time Tony Award victor, on July 12.
Spring Awakening, nominated for musical revival, had a cast that included many deaf actors, and their sign language was so beautifully incorporated it felt like its own kind of gorgeous music.
The top nominee among plays was the revival of Eugene O’Neill’s “Long Day’s Journey Into Night”, which garnered seven selections, including for best actress, Jessica Lange, and best actor, Gabriel Byrne.
I also think its incandescent star, Cynthia Erivo will deservedly walk away with the Tony for best actress in a musical.
The actors who are nominated for best featured actor in a play are Reed Birney for “The Humans”, Bill Camp for “The Crucible”, David Furr for “Noises Off”, Richard Goulding for “King Charles III”, and Michael Shannon for “Long Day’s Journey Into Night”.
Hollywood star and comedian Steve Martin scored two nominations, for book and co-writer of the score for the musical Bright Star.
FILE – Jeff Daniels sits backstage at the Belasco Theatre in NY, where he stars with Michelle Williams in “Blackbird”, an often brutal drama about an illegal relationship. The other nominees are Laura Benanti of “She Loves Me”, Carmen Cusack of “Bright Star“, Jessie Mueller of “Waitress” and Phillipa Soo of “Hamilton”.
A smash hit since it opened on Broadway in July of 2015, Hamilton has already won a multitude of awards, including a Grammy and a Pulitzer. Broadway veteran Alysha Deslorieux, a Booker T. Washington alumna, and Elizabeth Judd, a graduate of Collin College, are in the cast of Hamilton, with this marking Judd’s Broadway debut.

Eclipsed and Humans- both, like Hamilton, off-Broadway transfers – grabbed six nominations each.
