A’s win streak halted by Toronto Blue Jays

For the first time in six games, the Athletics did not make an error.

The Toronto attack, which was sluggish to open the season, woke up against the A’s with 20 runs, 32 hits and six home runs to win the series two games to one.

The Oakland left-hander followed that up by surrendering a double down the left-field line to Josh Donaldson, who found that way to celebrate Josh Donaldson Bobblehead Day at Rogers Center.

Ezequiel Carrera had the first four-hit game of his career and scored three times as the Blue Jays won for the first time in four games.

Friday marked a loss for the Blue Jays not only in the standings but also on the roster when it was announced that Chris Colabello had previously tested positive for a banned substance, the steroid dehydrochlormethyltestosterone. “We’ll put our heads together and see what we think going into the next one”.

One of his better efforts a year ago came at home against the A’s, limiting them to two runs and four hits in seven-plus innings in a 4-2 win on August 11.

“I felt I was a little off, to be honest”, the right-hander said. “They made some good swings on some really good pitches, nearly like they knew they were coming”.

Still sore over his demotion to the minors at the end of spring training, Hutchison wasn’t interested in assessing the offensive support he’s regularly received.

“There’s never a healthy lead against that offense”, Davis said. But they rebounded to take the next two and secured a series win over A’s, making Toronto the victor in the last seven of nine games against Oakland. But they sure made an impression on A’s catcher Stephen Vogt.

Jesse Chavez and Brett Cecil each got two outs, Drew Storen worked the eighth and Roberto Osuna finished for his sixth save.

Oakland jumped ahead 1-0 in the second inning as left fielder Khris Davis to Hutchison yard to right centre to give the A’s a 1-0 lead.

“Obviously we’re frustrated but we’re 4-2 on this road trip and we’re looking to finish it above”.

ROYALS 4, ORIOLES 2 (at Kansas City, Mo.) – Chris Young struck out 10 in six innings, Mike Moustakas homered, doubled twice and drove in three runs.

Now the A’s head to Detroit for the start of a four-game series.

Manager Bob Melvin would not guarantee the safety of Surkamp’s spot in the rotation.

“I was up in the zone and when you’re up in the zone like that, you’re going to get hit around”, a frustrated Sanchez said.

Oakland came into the game having held its opponents to 2.4 runs an outing during its five previous games. Carrera scored from third on Jose Bautista’s groundout. But Toronto roughed up Bassitt (0-1) early, with two runs in the first and three in the second with Donaldson’s three-run blast dropping over the 400-foot mark in centre field. “Pretty much that’s all there is to it”, Surkamp said. Toronto sits at 11th with 19 home runs this season and Oakland ranks 13th with 18.

Hutchison left to a standing ovation one out after Reddick’s solo drive in the sixth.

“It was a big day for a lot of guys, it really was”, Gibbons said. Donaldson’s mother, Lisa French, threw her son the ceremonial first pitch.

Oakland (10-7), the only team in the majors yet to lose away from home this season, extended its flawless road record to 7-0 despite squandering a 6-1 lead.

Blue Jays: C Russell Martin was scratched from the lineup and replaced by Josh Thole.
