Tony Awards: ‘Hamilton’ Wins Record-Breaking 16 Nominations

The Broadway hit “Hamilton” has shattered a record, earning 16 Tony Award nominations.
The nominees for Best Play are “The Humans”, “Eclipsed”, “The Father” and “King Charles III”.
The 70th annual Tony Awards ceremony is scheduled to be broadcast live from New York City’s Beacon Theatre on Sunday, June 12, at 8 p.m. on CBS.
Vying for best lead actress in a play are two Oscar winners – Jessica Lange for “Long Day s Journey Into Night” and Lupita Nyong o for “Eclipsed”, which is set amid the chaos of civil war in Liberia.
The supporting actor in a musical category also features Christopher Fitzgerald, a Rollins College alum.
Hamilton has already won a Pulitzer Prize and a Grammy, tickets are sold-out (and wildly expensive), and the show has become part of the cultural conversation.

The Evanston-bred Mueller received the 2014 Tony Award for best leading actress in a musical for her portrayal of Carol King in “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical”. The other nominees are “Blackbird“, “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” and “Noises Off”. Meanwhile, Orange Is The New Black’s Danielle Brooks scored a nomination for Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical for the revival of The Color Purple. (Hamilton), Zachary Levi (She Loves Me) and Alex Brightman (School of Rock). Hamilton, the hottest show on Broadway, just got hotter.
