It’s the most number of nominations a musical has ever received in a single year, beating 2001’s The Producers and 2009’s Billy Elliot, both of which held the previous record of 15.

Much-lauded hip-hop musical Hamilton has wowed the theatre industry with an historic 16 nominations for the 70th Tony Awards.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the music and lyrics as well as stars in the hip-hop musical, is nominated in three categories individually, for Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Lead Actor in a Musical.

A revival of Eugene O’Neill’s “Long Day’s Journey Into Night”, starring Jessica Lange and Gabriel Byrne, earned seven nominations, including a first for Lange for her third Broadway role.

The Tony Awards will be broadcast live from New York’s Beacon Theatre on June 12, at 8 p.m. ET (delayed PT).

We now know the answer is yes. Also nominated in the category was Leslie Odom, who plays Hamilton’s political rival Aaron Burr.

The musical would need to win 12 Tony Awards to tie the current record for most Tony wins. The shows deprived of a best-musical nod included “American Psycho”, “Tuck Everlasting” and the tunefully infectious Gloria Estefan jukebox musical “On Your Feet”.

The musical inspired by historian Ron Chernow’s book “AlexanderHamilton” also won nominations for set design, costume, lighting, direction – for Thomas Kail – choreography and orchestration. “And now I’m just trying to slow down the montage”.

Other best-play nominees are “The Father” by Florian Zeller, “The Humans” by Stephen Karam and “King Charles III” by Mike Bartlett.

“The Color Purple”, which Northrop High School graduate Heather Headley will star in beginning Tuesday, received four nominations including best revival of a musical. She’s won six of the trophies already.

Zachary Levi, former star of NBC’s “Chuck” making his second Broadway appearance, earned a leading man nomination for “She Loves Me”.

The Broadway play receives a record 16 Tony nominations. “Other than that, I haven’t figured anything out”.
