The hip-hop history show’s spirited creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, who’s popped up on TV shows ranging from “Charlie Rose” for a serious discussion of “Hamilton” to “Inside Amy Schumer” for a comedy sketch about his show, won three nominations, for lead performance and as author of the musical’s book and songs.
Phillipa Soo, and featured stars Jonathan Groff, Daveed Diggs, Renee Elise Goldsberry and Christopher Jackson also landed acting nominations.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s critically-acclaimed musical Hamilton has broken the record for the most Tony Award nominations.
Today (May 3), the musical was nominated for 16 Tony Awards, more than any other show in Broadway history.
The “Hamilton” haul Tuesday surpassed those of previous record-holders “The Producers” and “Billy Elliot”, which each received 15 nominations.
“School of Rock”, the adaptation by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Julian Fellowes of the Jack Black movie about a wannabe rocker who enlists fifth-graders to form a rock group, earned four nominations, including best musical, book, original score and best leading man in Alex Brightman.
The 70th annual Tony Awards will air from 8 to 11 p.m., June 5, on CBS.
Best Revival of a Musical: “The Color Purple”; “Fiddler on the Roof”: “She Loves Me”; “Spring Awakening”. Burr notoriously killed Hamilton in a duel-we assume the fight for this acting award will not have come to that.
We know his name, all right.
“Hamilton” is the enormous favourite to win the most coveted Tony Award, the prize for best new musical.
“Hamilton ” s biggest Best Musical competition is ‘Shuffle Along, Or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed” with 10 nominations.
Nominees for best new play include the American works “Eclipsed” and “The Humans” and the British dramedy “King Charles III” and the French drama “The Father”. In addition to Erivo and Soo, the nominees are Laura Benanti for “She Loves Me”, Carmen Cusack for “Bright Star” and Jessie Mueller in “Waitress“.
Alas no. Takei wound up tweeting about “Mad Max”, not the Tonys, and the Twitter account of his late show pledged allegiance to what else…”Hamilton”?
