Afeni Shakur Davis is the mother of renown rap artist Tupac Shakur. She gave birth to her only son a month later. Introduced by Will Smith, the two women paid tribute to the power of music and said they were both working to preserve their sons’ legacies. The role of Afeni Shakur is being played by actress Danai Gurira, who plays the character Michonne on the hit TV show the “Walking Dead”.
However, there’s no official word on cause of death as the medical examiner is still investigating the matter.
A biopic on the late rapper, “All Eyes On Me” is now being filmed, with Danai Gurira reportedly playing Afeni in the film.
Tupac recorded “Dear Mama” in 1995, forgiving his mother for her failings and thanking her for her love.
In 2014, Afeni co-produced a Broadway musical featuring music from Tupac entitled “Holler If Ya Hear Me”.
Afeni, real name Alice Faye Williams, was once a Black Panther activist and gave birth to Tupac just a month after being acquitted of charges for conspiring against the United States government and NY landmarks.
In 1997, a year after her son was killed, she founded the Tupac Amarachi Shakur Foundation.
Following the 1996 shooting death of Shakur, she became the manager of the slain rapper’s estate. Police arrested her and other party members in 1969 and charged them with conspiracy to bomb multiple city landmarks. “I was real happy, because I had a son”. It has not yet been revealed who will handle Tupac’s estate following Afeni’s passing.
She was also serving as executive producer on the long awaited Tupac biopic All Eyez on Me.
