‘Hamilton’ sets record with 16 Tony nominations

However, long before the Tony nominations, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hip-hop sensation about “the scrappy young immigrant who forever changed America” had started making waves nationally and internationally. Fortune said that scalpers earned hundreds of dollars since many people really wanted to see the show. Cuban-American orchestrator Alex Lacamoire and African-American actor Leslie Odom Jr., who plays Hamilton’s nemesis Aaron Burr (and is running against Miranda for leading actor), also mentioned the Gloria Estefan tribute On Your Feet, which garnered one nomination. Last year, Miranda and various cast members and musicians would hold short, impromptu performances outside Hamilton ” s theater.

Based on the official Tony Awards nominees list, “Hamilton” also had nominations for best costume design, best scenic design and best direction.

This is underscored annually when the Tony Award nominations are announced and CMU graduates are plucked out of Broadway’s chorus line for top honors.

The best play category is composed of Eclipsed, The Father, The Humans and King Charles III.

Hamilton will compete in the best musical category against Bright Star, School of Rock, Shuffle Along and Waitress. After graduating from Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose in 2005, Brightman headed to New York City for college. “I wanted to see if I could do that”. The musical was originally produced by New York’s Atlantic Theater Co. and ran for more than two years on Broadway in a 2006 production directed by Michael Mayer. Matt Rousu, an economics professor at Susquehanna University, told Bloomberg that ticket resellers can make as much as ,000 per show, for a grand total of around $240,000 every week.

“The brokers will just raise their prices even higher”, said Weiss, the author of “The Business of Broadway”.

Some Hollywood stars didn’t do so well on Tuesday, with Clive Owen, Al Pacino, Bruce Willis, Keira Knightley, Saoirse Ronan and George Takei all missing out on nods.

Visionary director Ivo van Hove, who had two Arthur Miller revivals this season of “The Crucible” and “A View from the Bridge”, got a nod only for “A View from the Bridge”, although both plays got nominated for best revivals. “I wrote 60 songs for In The Heights”, said Miranda, “and sort of went from a boy to a man writing that show, and I felt sad that there wasn’t a document of it”.
