US gov’t says North Carolina LGBT law violates civil rights
If a court upholds the U.S. attorney general’s position, the state of North Carolina stands to lose $861m in federal funding for schools.

A Justice Department spokesperson would not say Thursday whether or not the agency would pursue legal action against North Carolina or what finances might be restricted should they do so.
The Justice Department’s letter says that by abiding by the law known as HB2, UNC is violating Title VII and Title IX of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Violence Against Women Act.
