The rules compel retailers to verify the age of purchasers by photo identification and bar sales of the products in vending machines that are accessible to minors.

On Thursday, the FDA took a firm stance that it will regulate e-cigarettes and vaping products, banning them from minors.

New tobacco and e-cigarette regulations have some businesses in IN questioning what will happen next. The age limit to buy e-cigarettes is 19, all products sold in the state include a health warning and as of July 2016 all e-juices sold will have to include a list of ingredients.

E-cigarettes turn nicotine into an inhalable liquid vapor.

The FDA spent more than two years finalizing its proposal for regulating nontraditional tobacco products, delayed for months by industry resistance.

Previously proposed rules related to electronic cigarettes and other tobacco forms were formally released yesterday. “That could be a bad thing because by giving control to the big companies, they will promote the most profitable products – likely combusted cigarettes”, says Giovino, professor and chair of the Department of Community Health and Health Behavior, School of Public Health and Health Professions.

State health leaders say the regulations are overdue, especially considering the popularity of e-cigarette use among teens.

E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that do not contain the chemicals and tar that is present in tobacco.

“We’re thinking of this as a first step versus a last step in lots of work that needs to be done”, said Robin Koval, chief executive officer of the Truth Initiative, a nonprofit dedicated to ending tobacco use.

“We’ll have to stock only the flavors that are able to survive the regulations and are able to survive the million plus dollar cost”, said Ryan Steets, co-owner of Downtown Vapes. Cut down on the number of adolescents who start smoking and you cut down on the number of people who develop health problems later on life – problems associated with chronic smoking.
