Cameroon midfielder Ekeng dies after collapsing on pitch

Cameroonian global Patrick Ekeng was rushed to hospital after collapsing during a match with his Romanian club Dinamo Bucharest, local media reported on Friday.

As reported by Rosu, Ekeng collapsed seven minutes after being introduced into the game against FC Viitorul as a substitute.

The 26-year-old is believed to have fallen to the ground in the 70th minute of the match in the Romanian capital and he was rushed to hospital as doctors desperately attempted to resuscitate him.

Ekeng was taken by ambulance to the nearby Floreasca Emergency Hospital, which was swiftly surrounded by Dinamo fans desperate for news of a player who joined the club in January and was making his seventh league appearance.

More recently defender Grégory Mertens died three days after suffering a heart attack playing for his Belgian side Lokeren in April 2015.

Cordoba tweeted their shock at the player’s death.

The footballing community continues to mourn his loss. “We will never forget you dear friend”, Córdoba said in a statement on their official web page. “RIP”, said a message on the Spanish club’s Twitter feed.
