The engine of the 2016 Tesla Model S will have the same electric motor as its predecessor to power the rear wheels with a limited skip differential.

It also theoretically helps them increase sales in the many states that have banned auto companies from selling directly to buyers, instead requiring them to sell through third party dealerships or online.

Chief Executive Elon Musk announced Wednesday that the Palo Alto electric-car maker will give credits of $1,000 to Model S buyers who have been referred by Tesla owners.

Hit 10 successful referrals and you’ll be granted the right to purchase a Founder Series Model X SUV, a special-edition model not available to the public, with all $25,000 worth of listed options added free. Tesla’s management said that it spends $2,000 per vehicle sold through its stores.

Clearly, Tesla is trying to speed up some purchases, and given the timing, I have to wonder if Tesla’s isn’t afraid of the Model X cannibalizing Model S sales… or at least taking a chunk out of them. The P85D could cost up to $120,000, and is said to be delivered in the summer of this year. Tesla is rewarding those who are fast enough to be the first owner in each region where the company is operating to make ten referral orders, as each one will receive a free Tesla Model X crossover. Tesla is also offering some unique perks to Model S owners who refer a number of their friends: if you refer five, you get a tour of the Gigafactory.

Most recently for the quarter ending on 2015-03-31, Tesla Motors, Inc. As for the price, the range could be $70,000 for the base model and up to $100,000 for the fully upgraded and equipped trim. Musk said previously that the Model X would arrive in the latter part of the quarter, implying deliveries would likely start around September. If their friends buy a Tesla vehicle using that link, both parties get $1,000-easy as that.

But that’s not the only incentive in Tesla’s program. The program will last until the end of October, Bloomberg notes. “If you see somebody famous driving a Model S, it is because they genuinely like the vehicle”, he wrote. “If we can amplify word of mouth” writes Elon, “then we don’t need to open quite as many new stores in the future”.

“We have a lot of word-of-mouth sales”, said Musk. It will be the company’s first such program and will offer incentive such as a chance to get a free Model X.

Get your friends to buy enough of these and you could have yourself a Model X
