Samardzija extends one streak, snaps something else as Giants beat Reds

Cincinnati’s bullpen has given up at least one run in 20 consecutive games, matching the major league record since 1900, according to information provided by the Reds from the Elias Sports Bureau. An infield squibber from Kelby Tomlinson snapped a tie in the eighth, Samardzija snapped something else, and the Giants took a 3-1 victory at Great American Ball Park.

The lead was 7-2 when Straily exited with one out and the bases loaded in the seventh, leaving things in the hands a maligned bullpen that had set a major-league record the night before.

And for all the consternation over the Giants bullpen, it only takes one look at the Reds to realize that Bochy s relievers remain much nearer to an asset than a liability.

Phillips led off the second inning with his second homer of the season and first in 22 games since April 8. Joey Votto led off with a double off the wall in straightaway CF, moved to 3B on a single by Phillips, survived an iffy BP TOOTBLAN, and scored two batters later on a Suarez single to left-center. Santiago Casilla got the last three outs for his sixth save in eight chances.

Meanwhile, Jake Peavy (1-3), who came in 7-0 lifetime with a 2.38 ERA in 12 prior starts against the Reds, was defeated by Cincinnati for the first time. Cincinnati is 10-17 after Tuesday’s 3-1 loss. But on Tuesday night, San Francisco Giants pitcher Jeff Samardzija demonstrated that even pitchers get angry when they strike out.

Samardzija swung and missed at the first offering from Reds pitcher Caleb Cotham, and he fouled off the second one just beyond the right field line. But Belt, whose risks on the bases have proven unproductive this season, was thrown out trying to stretch his single into a double.

“It was a bang-bang play”, Bochy said. Peavy gave up seven earned in six innings and was charged with 13 runs in just eight innings on this road trip. All six runs were scored in the third inning, which ended up being a 12-run frame for NY. He gave up six hits and three walks while striking out four.

Reds outfielders, from left, Tyler Holt, Billy Hamilton, and Jay Bruce celebrate Wednesday after their 7-4 win against San Francisco in Cincinnati.

Amazingly, the 46 pitches were not the most Cueto had thrown in an inning. The Reds won in 11 innings, 6-5. At the end of the day, I was able to use my secondary pitches to get guys out and get the game in my favor.

Giants: RHP Matt Cain (0-3) is the scheduled starter for today’s opener of a four-game home series against Colorado. Price said that if Moscot’s shoulder is fine in the next few days, he could pitch out of the bullpen.

Angel Pagan (left hamstring) and Joe Panik (groin) continued to make enough progress that the Giants are not considering putting either player on the disabled list.
