Liverpool has beaten Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund, and now Spain’s fourth-best club in the knockout stages on a gruelling path to the final, which is in Basel, Switzerland, on May 18.

French forward Gameiro proved the difference in the tie, scoring three goals over the two legs to take his tally to 28 for the season and he is likely to be the main threat in the final against Liverpool, who overcame Villarreal 3-1 on aggregate in the other semi-final.

However, the hosts were not to be denied, Gameiro grabbing his second of the night just minutes into the second half before Mariano smashed home to seal victory on the hour mark. “I don’t think many people would have expected Shakhtar to get to the semi-finals of the Europa League”.

Gameiro went close to recording his hat-trick with a spectacular bicycle kick that flew over, then Sevilla scored the decisive third goal after 58 minutes.

Krychowiak’s throughball was ideal for Gameiro, who rounded Pyatov and finished into an empty net despite a rapidly narrowing angle to score his seventh goal in the competition this season.

Eduardo Da Silva pulled a goal back a minute before half-time.
