A court document says Loving got on the bus Tuesday around 10:30 a.m.in northeast Washington and about a minute later lunged at the bus driver with a pair of needle-nosed pliers.

District of Columbia Police Chief Lanier told the media in a briefing that the suspect is in custody.

A suspect attacked a Metrobus driver with a weapon Tuesday morning and hijacked his bus.

Calling the suspect “very distraught and violent”, Lanier said the incident was “bizarre” and “uncharacteristic” for a person to take a bus and then attack a bus driver.

The bus driver was taken to the hospital. More commonly, drivers are spat on, slapped and punched, or rocks are thrown at buses. The bus has already been recovered by the police. The man shut the door and drove off, but as the bus pulled into a gas station parking lot, it went over a curb and hit the pedestrian, who was killed.

The affidavit also says Loving brought the bus to a stop at a Crown gas station before hitting and killing Anthony Payne. The 30-year-old has been charged with second-degree murder.

Several attacks previous year gained wide attention, including a shooting in which a gunman standing in front of a bus disabled it and then fired through the windshield, aiming at another man who had a gun. “It was a freaky incident”.

There were only four passengers on the bus at the time of the hijacking and they were all able to get off the vehicle unharmed.
