The 23-year-old former Benfica player stressed that the entire Atletico squad played “very well”. “But we improved after the break and made it hard for them”, Torres said. “We need a point, a win, to become German champions”.

Bayern lost the semi-final first leg 1-0 in Spain, and went out on away goals despite beating Atletico 2-1 in return match in Munich on Tuesday.

There was heartbreak for Bayern in the Allianz Arena last night as they crashed out of the Champions League, at the semi-final stage, courtesy of an away goal bagged by Atletico Madrid.

Simeone has taken Atletico to their second Champions League Final in three years, with the opposition both times Real Madrid, and he was asked about the May 28 fixture in a radio interview. We can still finish the season celebrating. However, the “Bavarians” needed 20 minutes to create the first promising chance against Atletico’s bulwark, but Robert Lewandowski was unable to overcome on-rushing Atletico’s goalkeeper Jan Oblak from close range after a pass from Thomas Mueller.

But it wasn’t to be and Bayern’s hopes of appearing in the Champions League Final, in Milan, were over.

“We missed one more goal in the game today”.

Still, there was similar drama late in the second half when Bayern’s Manuel Neuer saved Fernando Torres’ penalty kick.

The France forward has been getting better and better since moving to Atletico in the summer of 2014 and now has 31 goals in his 51 appearances this term, including seven from 12 games in the Champions League.

Atletico’s road to final also included a victory over defending champions Barcelona in the quarter-finals.

He hopes his replacement, Carlo Ancelotti, can now win the European title next season with Bayern.

The second leg was played at Dalymount Park on the 1 October 1958, and despite the Irishmen trying their best, they suffered a 5-1 loss.

It was a lead Real never looked like surrendering but they spurned numerous chances to add to it and the away goals rule meant City were only one moment of inspiration away from transforming the whole tie.

“That is football. You can play better and still be eliminated”, said Guardiola, who will move to Manchester City next season.

Pep Guardiola's failure to win a European trophy will ensure he is not remembered
