Prosecutors charge man in Wisconsin interstate shooting

Czaczkowski’s husband works for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, but authorities have said there is no indication the family was targeted. Phone calls to numbers publicly listed for Hays’ family were either disconnected or rang unanswered, and it wasn’t immediately clear whether he had an attorney.

Two of Hays’ brothers also were in the Blazer on Sunday.

Hays’ brothers also were in the Blazer, authorities said.

An emergency helicopter arrived at the scene where Tracy Czaczkowski and her family were after returning from the Wisconsin Dells.

Czaczkowski, 44, had been visiting Wisconsin Dells with her husband and two children, who were not injured in the shooting.

The sheriff’s office identified one of those brothers as Jeremy A. Hays, 30, who is being held on a tentative charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Czaczkowski is survived by her husband, Greg, and her children, Matthew and Sofia, who were in their vehicle when a homicide suspect opened fire on I-90/I-94 near Lake Delton this past Sunday.

Sauk County Sheriff Chip Meister told News 3 Tuesday afternoon that Czaczkowski had died.

Ricciardi initially set bail at $25,000 because she thought the police report said Hays supplied his younger brother with the guys.

Multiple counties, including Milwaukee, Columbia, Sauk, and Dane are continuing to investigate collaboratively to determine what charges will be referred to the respective District Attorneys.

Hays was taken into custody near mile marker 125 after the Blazer was disabled by road spikes put down by Dane County Sheriff’s deputies.

Police have said they stopped the suspect’s vehicle and shot him when he emerged with a gun. A 20-year-old man is charged in connection with the shooting death of a mother of two from north suburban Buffalo Grove.

Authorities say Zachary Hays was shot and wounded by Sheriff’s deputies a short time after the woman’s killing, when he ignored police orders.

Zachary Hays is also accused of killing a West Allis man, but those charges have not yet been filed.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office says investigators believe 20-year-old Zachary Hays shot Tracy Czaczkowski on Sunday as she and her family drove along an interstate on their way home to IL.
