The 10-year-old girl was able to make her way back to shore with the help of a bystander.
According to Masullo, the report of people in distress came in shortly before 7 p.m. Upon arrival, police learned that the mother of one of the children went into the water to try to rescue them.
Creighton’s body was spotted by Erie County’s Air One helicopter and recovered about a mile from where the original incident happened.
‘When the lake gets like this, be very, very careful, ‘ Mecca warned.
“This type of wave action will literally pull you right out, you get an undertow”, said Nick Mecca, the North Evans Fire district chief. It’s best not to even be out in it when the waves are just slamming like they were.
Authorities have not released the identities or conditions of the rescued girls who were taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
County Executive Mark Poloncarz said swimming is not allowed at Wendt Beach so there were no life guards on duty.
