A Venango county woman was hospitalized because of the disease, according to the state Heath Department.
Oneida County reported its first West Nile positive sample – out of 97 tested so far this summer – on July 16.
The virus tends to be spread by mosquitoes that bite birds carrying the disease and then bite humans or other mammals. “People over 50 years old and those with compromised immune systems are at a higher risk of becoming seriously ill if infected with the virus”.
Most people who get infected with West Nile virus never have symptoms.
There is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatments, but over-the-counter pain relievers can be used to reduce a fever.
The departments of Health and Environmental Protection say they strongly recommend that all residents minimize their exposure to mosquitoes. Don’t forget to drain water from tires, cans, flowerpots, clogged rain gutters, rain barrels, toys and puddles.
Symptoms of West Nile virus may include headache, fever, fatigue, dizziness, weakness and confusion.

According to the Glenn County Health and Human Services, these are the first cases in Glenn County in 2015. The virus is primarily transmitted by infected mosquitoes. The insects can breed in as little as one-quarter inch of standing water. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention, officials said.

Keep child wading pools empty and on their sides when not being used. Use mosquito repellents containing the active ingredient DEET. “This would include using mosquito repellent, remaining indoors at peak times, covering your arms and legs by wearing appropriate clothing, and eliminating standing water around your home”.
