After some time with her children following a busy tour of India, the Duchess of Cambridge was back to royal duties again this morning. His name is Marvin and he is a hamster.

During a visit to Hampton Court Palace on Wednesday, the Duchess shared the happy news with a 9-year-old girl named Darcey. “She said George would love the dragon but he would be a bit scared”.

There was no word on whether Charlotte’s brother Prince George, 2, likes Marvin too.

RHS award-winning landscape gardener Mr Myers said the Duchess was “very enthusiastic” about the new garden.

As the royal family is known to be animal-friendly, he will not be short of company. “I guess she would have had to worry about him if she had”. Perhaps he’ll be a fan of it when he’s older, and maybe Kate will even take him with her sometime.

The down to earth Duchess replied: “Just call me Kate”. While viewing the pictures, she chatted to Josh Olins – the photographer responsible for the shoot – joking: “It doesn’t look like January”.

The chairman of Historic Royal Palaces, Rupert Gavin, said the Duchess was “bowled over” by the gardens.

As she was shown around the exhibition, Kate asked lots of questions and commented on the glamorous images – remarking one had “fantastic texture” and looked “almost casual”.

You would think the Royal mum of two would bring an nearly three-year-old Prince George along to play with the children.
