Maryland earns top seeds in men’s and women’s NCAA lacrosse tourneys
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) The Big Ten Conference has announced its awards in men’s lacrosse and Rutgers is a big victor.

Maryland claimed the overall No. 1 seed and will open the tournament by hosting either Quinnipiac or Hartford, which will face off in one of two play-in games Wednesday.
“I saw the ball in the air and I knew there was only a couple seconds left”. It gave the University of Maryland its 14th Big Ten Conference title since joining the league in 2015 – tied for the most during that span with MI. “Luckily it went it in”.
The Terrapins (14-2) are making their 39th NCAA Tournament appearance, and NCAA-best 14th straight. The Scarlet Knights record stands at 11-5 on the season. Dylan Maltz had a hat trick and Cole posted two goals and two assists. The junior attackman, who now has registered at least one point in 35 consecutive games, scored his 100th career goal to give Maryland a two-goal lead in the first quarter, but it was his aforementioned goal to beat the first-quarter buzzer that gave Maryland a 5-2 lead and dazzled the crowd at Homewood Field.
After Rutgers received a goal from Christian Trasolini, the Scarlet Knights committed a pair of penalties that resulted in a six-on-four advantage for the Terps.
The Terrapins senior goaltender, Kyle Bernlohr, had 12 saves in the victory. “That was just a pretty gritty win to be a part of”.
Shelby Fredericks and the Wildcats secured the next seven draw controls (after losing the first three) and turned solid offensive possessions into four straight goals of their own, taking a 5-4 lead. “I thought they came out with a pretty good plan in the first quarter – going down six to nothing set the tone for the game, they could play a style and a pace that was much more conducive to a Maryland lacrosse team and Penn State really had to climb and push with a lot more urgency than we would have liked from the opening minutes”. “That’s a tough pill to swallow if you’re a Scarlet Knight or a Scarlet Knight fan”. It was the finishing touch on a relentless performance. Colin Heacock and Henry West each had hat tricks in the game, while Bryan Cole scored the game-winner with 43 seconds remaining in overtime.

The game was certainly a tale of two halves and in the first, NU was inspired. The championship marked Maryland’s fifth conference tournament title in history, and third regular season and conference tournament sweep. We just couldn’t execute on a couple of things we’d like to have back.
