Instant Replay: Reds crush Peavy, Giants fail to sweep

In the 3-1 loss, the Reds’ bullpen surrendered a run for the 21st consecutive team game, setting a new Major League record.

When it comes to giving up runs game after game, nobody in major league history has been as bad as these Reds relievers.

Straily allowed three runs on six hits in 6.1 innings for his second consecutive quality start and the Reds fourth in a row, fifth in six games and sixth in eight.

Eugenio Suarez had three hits, including a two-run homer, and Brandon Phillips and Adam Duvall added solo shots for the Reds (11-17), who avoided being swept by the Giants in Cincinnati for the first time since 1999.

Samardzija has done Bo Jackson not only one better, but two better and now three better. It’s been a pretty sketchy year for Peavy so far, as he’s carrying an 8.61 ERA with a 2.00 WHIP over five starts, a 1-2 record and 23 total innings. He missed the first two games of the series against San Francisco before rejoining the lineup and hitting a two-run homer off Peavy.

“We have to savor every victory”, said manager Bryan Price after the Reds second win in the last ten games. Peavy gave up seven earned in six innings and was charged with 13 runs in just eight innings on this road trip. And no, pitchers usually don’t get so worked up over striking out – especially when they are poised to set a personal benchmark.

On Wednesday afternoon, Peavy was facing Cincinnati, a club he had dominated during his career, going 7-0 with a 2.38 ERA over 12 starts. Still, I think Cincinnati can gather up enough offense to knock Peavy around and secure the win. After having surgery a year ago, Cozart was concerned about the possibility of another injury to the knee. He led off the top of the second inning, with a line-drive homer to right center field. They did manage to run up Lamb s pitch count, though, ensuring that the Reds bullpen gate would swing open at some point. At the end of the day, I was able to use my secondary pitches to get guys out and get the game in my favor.

NOTES: Reds LHP John Lamb was recalled from Triple-A Louisville to start Tuesday night in place of RHP Jon Moscot, who has discomfort in his non-throwing shoulder.

Former Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto got a loud ovation from the crowd of 14,309 when he was shown in the Giants’ dugout about the first inning. OF Angel Pagan is still sidelined by a mildly strained left hamstring.
