Cubs Acquire Dan Haren

The Chicago Cubs were paying the trade market to find pitching gold, but they weren’t able to land either of their top targets before the deadline passed.

The Chicago Cubs have made their first trade prior to the Major League Baseball non-waiver deadline and acquired a starting pitcher from the Miami Marlins.

It isn’t the splash that many were expecting the Cubs to try and make, although it doesn’t necessarily mean that Theo Epstein is done dealing.

Haren now joins his fifth organization since 2012, having followed his three-season Angels tenure with stints as a National and Dodger before joining the Marlins. They had been connected to frontline starters like Cole Hamels and David Price, as noted by CSNChicago.com, but both players wound up getting dealt to other teams.

Hamels wa sa loss that stung a little bit more just because there’s those three years of club control on his contract after this season.

That left the Cubs scrambling on the second-tier market before finally settling on Haren, who isn’t a bad alternative. It didn’t end up being a huge rifle, but the Cubs still landed a great starting pitcher in Dan Haren to add to the rotation.

Haren has been solid this season for the Marlins, compiling a 7-7 record to go along with a 3.42 ERA and 88 strikeouts.

Haren beat the Cubs 7-3 at Marlins Park on June 3. Haren is a solid addition to the back-end of the Cubs’ rotation, and they likely still have interest in acquiring a piece like Tyson Ross if the asking price is reasonable.
