Bayern Munich have completed the signing of Benfica youngster Renato Sanches, stunning Manchester United fans after months of speculation claiming that the teenager’s move to Old Trafford was as good as done.

The 18-year-old attracted interest from United during the winter window, though the Premier League side failed to close the deal in time.

However, seemingly out of nowhere, the Bavarian giants have stolen a march on their English counterparts and wrapped up a deal for around €35m.

“Renato Sanches has been observed by FC Bayern over a long period”, CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said in a media release.

“We’re pleased we’ve been able to sign him despite big-name worldwide competition”.

“Renato is a dynamic, combative and technically gifted midfielder, who will strengthen our team further”.

Sanches is incoming coach Carlo Ancelotti’s first signing, and the German club will pay €35 million (R608 million) plus add-ons if Sanches is voted into the FIFA World XI or wins the Ballon d’Or.

Bayern have confirmed that the fee will be an initial €35million, with the midfielder having signed a five-year deal at the Allianz Arena.
