However, police said the man – named locally as Paul H. – appeared incoherent and may be sent to a psychiatric hospital, while stressing he had no known links to Islamist militant groups.

He stabbed a 56-year-old man aboard the train who later died of his injuries.

Prosecutor Ken Heidenreich told a news conference that the suspect’s statements were inconsistent and that they are doubtful as to whether he can be held criminally responsible, suggesting he may not be mentally fit to stand trial.

The Associated Press contributed reporting.

The Independent is reporting that the state prosecutor has claimed that attacker had an “Islamist background”, but did not go into further details.

Up to four more people were stabbed and hurt.

“Something like this is completely new and has shaken people deeply – it is something you only see on television”.

Mayor of Grafing, Angelika Obermayr, condemned today’s attack.

Spokesperson for the Bavarian state criminal investigation office said the police are investigating the matter to ascertain the motive of the assault.

“Witness questioning shows that there were politically motivated comments on the perpetrator’s part” during the attack, he told n-tv television.

The suspect, who was barefoot at the time, was arrested at the scene and police were able to seize the weapon.

Police say one person has died in a hospital after the stabbing at a train station outside Munich.

Investigators have not confirmed whether it was a terror attack at this stage.

A German man stabbed to death one person and slashed three more Tuesday in what authorities said may have been an Islamist attack, without ruling out that the assailant suffered mental problems.

One man is dead and three others are injured after a knife attack at a commuter rail station outside of Munich, Germany Tuesday morning.

“The attack happened shortly before 5 a.m. local time (11 p.m. ET) in Grafing, 23 miles (37 kilometers) east of Munich, officials said”.

A 27-year-old man was eventually overpowered by police and arrested.
