A family in Texas says the boy kicked off his shoes and left them in the auto.

When they went outside Saturday morning they found the backseat had caught fire. “I don’t know if he could have told me his foot was getting hot, and I don’t think he could have taken it off by himself”, Jovan stated.

A fire that started inside a Houston family’s auto is under investigation, but the family believes they know the cause.

The Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office is still working to determine what caused the fire. Jovan’s wife ripped the shoes down to find that the lights are actually powered by lithium batteries. The family, however, says there were only shoes and clothes in the vehicle.

A mom in West Houston bought the “light-up shoes” for her toddler and now she wants to warn other parents of the potential danger.

Jovan says she’s relieved.

Photos from the couple showed that one side of one shoe was burned away.

“I was rather surprised there was a little lithium ion battery in there just to get some LED lights blinking”.

“I didn’t know there’s a battery in there that could be flammable if it’s shorted”, Attila told KHOU.

“If this had happened while my son was wearing them or in the house, who knows”, said Jovan Viraj, the boy’s mother. The Virags are planning to contact Payless to alert them of what happened.
