Ryan opens door to stepping down as convention chair, if Trump asks

“If he wants to dictate who the nominee is” for vice president, “the delegates may not go along”, said Roger Stauter, a Cruz delegate from Madison, Wisconsin, who said he would never support Trump.

He later expressed disappointment, telling NBC on Sunday: “He called me, I think, to congratulate me about NY, ’cause I won by massive numbers”. We’ll likely know then whether Ryan may indeed get some extra family time in the month of July. “We just didn’t”, said Ryan to Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

For all Trump’s bluster and the invective he directs at people he doesn’t like, he’s shown he can be incredibly forgiving, and those who’ve dealt with him say he’s gracious, attentive and diplomatic in person.

“I would not have become speaker of the House if I had 2020 aspirations”.

The sooner Paul Ryan understands the 2016 election isn’t about him, the sooner the Republicans can put the party’s infighting behind them and focus on the big prizes – the presidency/ and, by extension, the future of the Supreme Court and the future direction of the country.

That highly unusual state of affairs is creating a tricky situation for Republicans in the House and Senate, some of whom fear Trump could prove a drag on their own re-election chances in a year when the GOP is fighting to hang onto its slim Senate majority. “It’s going to take more than a week just to fix and unify this party”, said Ryan in a Facebook Live interview with The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday. “I think the Trump folks are willing to explore this. I think I’m going to win the race either way”.

Ryan added that Romney knows how he feels about the issue. But McCain said it would take a lot to ever stand on stage next to him after Trump’s comments last July that he prefers people who don’t get captured in war.

Oklahoma’s Republican Party received a similar letter from the Cruz campaign, state GOP chair Pam Pollard told CNN.

In an interview with CNN, Schneider said Ryan seemed to be in “good spirits” when he said he would do what Trump wanted. “I’ll do whatever he wants with respect to the convention”.

“I just want the guy to win”.

“Donald Trump is not wanting to rewrite the platform, okay?”

The long-time OH congressman’s plans come amid escalating tensions between leading Republicans and the party’s presumptive nominee, Donald Trump. Trump immediately fired back, saying he didn’t know if he could support Ryan’s agenda in the House. “I’ll see after. I will give you a very solid answer if that happens”.

TRUMP: Chris, I spoke very little about that compared to other things. If she does, it would pit the party’s 2008 vice presidential nominee directly against its 2012 nominee.

If that’s the case, Trump might be wise to meet Ryan halfway.

“I have nothing to do with that”. She’s a terrific person… “And as the leader of the GOP, the convention, certainly he is to remain neutral, and for him to already come out and say who he will not support is not a wise decision of his”. Ryan has said he would be as neutral as “Switzerland” in that role. “He called me three weeks ago, and he was so supportive”. You said, well I’ll work with them. “But by the time it’s negotiated, they’ll go up”, Mr. Trump told ABC’s This Week.
