But he added that there were questions over whether the “confused” suspect could be held criminally responsible and said evaluations were underway over whether he should be taken to a psychiatric facility.
This suggests that the man may not be mentally fit to stand trial.
Segerer said the man had made “politically motivated” statements but would not confirm what was believed to be said.
Officials said the suspect had arrived at Grafing station overnight, having been unable to afford a hotel in Munich, and launched his attack on the morning’s first S-Bahn train toward the city centre.
A German national went on a knifing spree at the Grafing railway station and was heard to have shouted “Allah-o-Akbar” while carrying out the attack.
Senior police official Guenther Gietl said a woman reported hearing the words “infidel, you must die” at the time of the stabbing early Tuesday.
Bavaria’s top security official says investigators have no indications that the suspect in a stabbing at a train station had an Islamic extremist motive. However, after the questioning of the perpetrator, reports quoted Bavaria state’s interior ministry spokesman as saying, “We have found the man had psychological and drug problems”.
One victim died in hospital and three others were being treated for their wounds.
The attacker has been identified as a 27-year-old German man, who Heumann says was from the state of Hesse.
Merkur.de is reporting that the offender is 27 and “of German origin”.
“Something like this is absolutely new and shakes people deeply – otherwise, they only know this kind of thing from television”, she said.
“That something like that happened here is absolutely unbelievable”.
Angelika Obermayr, the mayor of Grafing, told N-TV local people were in shock in the “quiet little town”.
German police confirmed several people had been stabbed at a station near Munich.
Ken Heidenreich, spokesman for the Munich prosecutor’s office in charge of the case, said one of the survivors had “serious injuries” but that he had no details on whether they were thought to be life-threatening.

The man, who had spent the night outside Munich railway station, launched his apparently random knifing spree around 5am (11am Malaysia) in the small town of Grafing, 30km east of the Bavarian state capital.
