Cass County finds West Nile Virus in mosquito pool

Officials from the San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District in California announced that it will conduct a fogging operation in Menlo Park on Sunday and Monday to eradicate the presence of West Nile virus-carrying mosquitoes in the area.

The unidentified patient has West Nile neuroinvasive disease, the most severe form, Tarrant County Public Health said in a news release.

West Nile virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito.

Three people became ill with the infection in 2012.

Prather says the positive test result should not panic anyone, but serve as a reminder that the virus is out there and people should continue to stay vigilant in protecting themselves from mosquitoes.

Dan Wolford, Longmont land program administrator, said that no matter where Longmont residents live in the city, they should be taking personal precautions. There have been no positive samples of EEE so far this year.

In 2014, the first human case was reported on August. 4.

However, the second woman -who is in her 40s from Payette County- was hospitalized after reporting symptoms beginning in early July. Use repellents containing no more than 30 percent DEET for adults and children.

Locals are also urged to keep their doors and windows closed and remove standing water around their homes to keep the mosquitoes from having a place where they can thrive and multiply. Others show symptoms similar to the flu, with fever, nausea, head aches and a rash on the chest, stomach or back.

The risk of mosquito-borne illness increases during the summer months until there is a hard frost in the fall
