But that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop watching. Let’s just move on…
He led a race-best 46 laps, including the final 17, to win as eight cars fittingly were crashing behind him a quarter-mile short of the finish line. This weekly article will come out every Monday.
The dash to the line in NASCAR is always carnage, and this was no exception. Now, I will warn you, I’m not a writer that writes just about the popular things.
Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Nothing went right for Earnhardt. And my NASCAR blogs aren’t for NASCAR fans that aren’t really fans. It’s the crown jewel race, and messing with it might be the last straw for fans. Dillon climbed from the back of the field and finished an impressive 6th.
Defending champ Dale Earnhardt Jr had his steering wheel come loose, which caused him to run into Carl Edwards, preventing him from winning his third straight race.
“It was awesome”, a fan said as I walked into a Birmingham hotel after the race.
During all of the above, the auto of rookie Chris Buescher barrel rolled like Ricky Bobby in “Talladega Nights”. The 34 flipped over three times in an early wreck.
“You can’t [have cars go airborne] but so many times before we need to realize something [needs to change]”, he told USA Today. That’s the problem for all drivers at Talladega. The rain never came, and the thrills and the prayers never ended. The move had been planned going into the race …
Kasey Kahne said, “Guys were being aggressive, and it felt like it was late in the race the whole race”. But, the action created a wreckfest for the ages.
“We don’t want cars to go in the air”, Keselowski said. His No. 55 vehicle promptly made contact with Casey Mears, and Aric Almirola was also caught in the crash.
Brad Keselowski in the No. 2 vehicle took home victory.
NASCAR made its return to Talladega on Sunday, and to the surprise of exactly no one, there were big crashes.
If that sounds like Keselowski is throwing down a challenge to drivers who have second thoughts about racing at Talladega – asking if they are up to the task – there might be something to that.
Despite a thinned field, the racing stayed intense. Within that series-wide estimate, some teams estimated they lost $500,000 per auto – total loss situations – while others estimated $250,000 without including any engine damage. Brad Keselowski eventually won the race, with Kyle Busch in second and Austin Dillon in third.
Keselowski won by a auto length, with Ky. Seventeen drivers were in two, and one of that number, Austin Dillon, finished third.
And Busch, for the record, was the race’s runner-up.
But the high-speed, high-risk, high-reward nature of restrictor-plate racing at Talladega – as well as at Daytona International Speedway – continues to produce sometimes horrifying accidents.
Kyle Busch exhibited little pleasure in finishing second.
“I like the races here”, Keselowski said with a victorious grin. At Talladega, though, the seesaw between the two can be dramatic. Drivers spoke of anxiety and unease and underpinned it all with the spoken hope that safety and engineering would provide sanctuary with so much else out of their control. Starting 22nd, 15-plus bonus points and upwards of 50 fantasy points are certainly possible. It’s all part of the craziness that can go on at ‘Dega, and I’m sure Kevin Harvick (above) didn’t mind. But Danica Patrick’s brutal backstretch hit, the one that left her grabbing her knees and searching for a breath, was softened by SAFER “soft wall” barriers. Stewart is likely to surpass that mark, but he will need a win to go along with that.
Plus, road courses have been some of NASCAR’s best shows ever since double-file restarts were implemented. As it stands, any driver coming into Talladega who looks forward to the race is an increasingly rare species. The laps led and fastest laps run categories are almost impossible to predict at a restrictor-plate track, and more importantly, they typically aren’t a great source of points because so many drivers tend to lead the race. Jamie McMurray and fourth in the Chip Ganassi racing Chevrolet.

“Putting on a show, in that crashes happen”. None of the drivers were injured in the incident.
