‘Captain America: Civil War’ wins box office. Did positive reviews help?

Civil War is set to become one of the biggest movies of all time, and as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to churn out quality films, there are bound to be plenty of Easter Eggs that reference the movies and the source material.

The latest Deadline summary puts the movie at a staggering total of $678.39 million worldwide – more than enough to keep Marvel happy, especially if it ends up holding strong over its second weekend. Keanu limped in at number five, with $3.1 million.

Several other Avengers figures appear in the movie, including Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie and Jeremy Renner.

Jonathan Papish, an industry analyst at China Film Insider, pointed out that Disney didn’t even shy away from calling the movie “Captain America” in a direct translation in China, despite that not necessarily being the optimal title to clear Chinese censors.

With high numbers, “Captain America: Civil War” could probably be the “highest-grossing non-Avengers comic book film in history”.

Captain America: Civil War is now in theaters. The star-spangled superhero ensemble opened up Thursday evening previews with a damn good $25 million – the 10th highest ever domestically, just behind Batman v Superman ($27.7 million) and Avengers: Age of Ultron ($27.6 million). The saga of warring superheroes, Marvel’s latest offering has managed to earn a staggering amount of money in its first three days at the box office. “Ant-Man” also got more mixed reviews than, for example, “Captain America: Civil War”.

Civil War kicked off moviedom’s all-important summer season.

The fourth weekend of The Jungle Book finished second to Captain America with US$21.9 million at 4,144 sites to lift its 24-day total to US$285 million. It has been less than two weeks since the release of Civil War, but the movie has already surpassed the $700 million mark.
