While the show has been on the bubble for renewal pretty much since its first season, oddsmakers predicted the drama would squeak into another pickup for the fall. In late April, Deadline reported that Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz had been appointed as showrunners for the fifth season, and that they were assembling a team of writers and beginning to work on stories for new episodes.

This season, “Nashville” is averaging a 1.8 rating in adults 18-49 and 6.7 million viewers overall in Nielsen’s “live plus-7” estimates.

Former network chief Paul Lee, one of Nashville’s strongest supporters, is no longer at ABC.

Nashville” premiered in 2012 and was filmed on location, as well as a dedicated soundstage in East Nashville. Nashville Mayor Megan Barry tells The Tennessean that the show’s cancellation will be a big loss to the city and state of Tennessee.

Instead, ABC has decided the end the show. Elton John will make a guest appearance on next week’s show (May 18th) playing himself.
