IPhone Story: Texas Man Says His Device Survived 9300-Foot Fall

Wilson dropped the phone after a pressure change caused the passenger door to slightly open on the Beechcraft Bonanza he was flying in, the AP report said.

Once he’d landed safely in Wichita Falls, Wilson realized his iPhone was missing too.

The lost iPhone not only reported its location, but also laid out a map where owner Ben Wilson could find it. He and an employee used an app to narrow the search to near Jacksboro, more than 50 miles away. Kidwell traced the signal to a fenced-in pasture, and the hunt began.

“The pressure popped and a newspaper flew out but I didn’t see the phone go. I think he was trying to help us find the phone”.

Traveling down a ranch road, he said a donkey followed the two men as they searched for the device, which they finally located on the side of the road under a mesquite tree. “We used his Find My iPhone app and learned it was still alive”, a colleague of Wilson said, “Later I checked the iCloud and could see it was outside of Joplin (Texas)”. Wilson had encased the iPhone in a protective case with an external battery pack, which was the only piece that snapped off in the fall and couldn’t be found.
