Second-year cornerback Bashaud Breeland had to be carted off the practice field on Friday after suffering an apparent right leg injury.

His immediate diagnosis or status was not known, but teammates told reporters after the practice session that they were hopeful the Clemson product did not injure his ACL. He will, however, be allowed to participate in all offseason activities, including preseason games.

During his collegiate career, he had 159 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, six interceptions for 142 yards in 37 games (24 starts). Even if Breeland lost out on a starting gig, he was expected to play Washington’s nickel corner spot and was going to see significant playing time.

Earlier on Friday, Breeland learned that he would have to serve a one-game suspension to start the season as punishment for the citation for simple possession of marijuana, which is a misdemeanor, that he received at the end of the 2014 training camp. The fourth-round draft pick was cited on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University, about a dozen blocks from the Redskins’ training camp facility.

“And he’s a key member of our special teams”, Washington coach Jay Gruden said after the suspension news was released — but before the practice session when Breeland injured himself.
