Yahoo buys fashion website Polyvore

Polyvore, a social commerce site that lets users make artisitic product collages, was founded by three Yahoo alums.

Yahoo today announced via blog post that it will acquire social fashion and shopping startup Polyvore. The New Yorker once described it as “a lot like playing paper dolls with pictures of real clothes”.

While Yahoo is highlighting its plans to incorporate Polyvore’s commerce and community features onto properties like Yahoo Style and Yahoo Beauty, a spokesperson said there will be “no change” to the startup’s website and apps: “With Yahoo’s support and investment, the technology and business are expected to grow with time”.

Yahoo, which didn’t disclose phrases of the deal, stated Polyvore will speed up its “Mavens” progress technique.

With more than 20 million unique monthly users, the company says on its about page that its average shopping cart size for partner networks is $383, larger than all the other social networks combined.

Polyvore will continue to offer its core service on a stand-alone basis. “I’m also excited that we’ll be able to deliver more scale to our advertisers by integrating our ad offerings into Yahoo Gemini”.

“Polyvore has built an excellent team, a category leading product, and a strong business based on a highly engaged community”, said Simon Khalaf, Yahoo’s senior vice president of publisher products. Both women worked together at Google, and Lee has credited Mayer with convincing her to work for the search giant. Polyvore CEO Jess Lee will remain in her position and report to Khalaf.
