Authorities say 33-year old Samantha Broberg, of Galveston, Texas, is beleived have fallen overboard from the Carnival Liberty.
A ship-wide search for Broberg was conducted but she was eventually spotted on security camera footage reportedly going overboard around 2 a.m. Friday, about 195 miles off the coast of Galveston, according to Carnival and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Officials from the agency said that the district command centre in New Orleans was contacted by the 13-deck cruise ship Carnival Liberty and alerted about a missing passenger. No hometown for Broberg was given.
Kendrick said the focus of their investigation right now is to rescue the victim, not to determine a motive for why she may have gone overboard. “We ask for privacy as our family comes together during this hard time”, Broberg’s family said in a statement to the Chronicle.
It added: “Carnival is providing support to the guest’s traveling companions and family”.
Crew members spent much of the day searching the ship for Broberg.
The ship had left Galveston for Cozumel, Mexico about 10 hours earlier. “They were just keeping us updated like ‘we have not found her”, according to KTRK News.
