A Tonganoxie man accused in the fatal shooting of a Kansas City, Kan., police detective was charged with capital murder today, a day after Missouri authorities charged him with shooting a woman during a failed attempt to steal a auto and escape law enforcement.
Police were called to the Hollywood Casino near the Kansas Speedway on Monday after a casino security agent saw Ayers loitering in the parking lot. He abandoned that vehicle, leaving the children unharmed, and took another auto that he wrecked in Kansas City, Missouri, where officers shot him moments after Ayers shot and wounded a woman in a failed carjacking, investigators said.
Jackson County, Missouri, Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker charged Ayers Tuesday with first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, resisting arrest and three counts of armed criminal action.
On Tuesday, Jackson County prosecutors charged Ayers with multiple felonies as a result of the Bannister Road incident. They are particularly interested in learning Ayers’ whereabouts between the time the Basehor man was robbed and when Ayers was stopped by police in Kansas City. A Kansas City, Kan., police detective helping respond to a report of a. Lancaster, a married father of two daughters, died three hours later after undergoing surgery, his department said.
“This detective demonstrated that bravery, and his sworn commitment to keeping us safe, when he attempted to stop a carjacking near Kansas Speedway earlier this afternoon”, Holland wrote.
In comments posted on the department’s website Tuesday, Police Chief Terry Zeigler expressed thanks for the prayers, messages and support for Lancaster’s family and the department.
Lancaster was shot at least twice about 12:30 p.m. Monday while responding to a report of a suspicious person near the Kansas Speedway.
Also on Tuesday, more details emerged about Monday’s multi-state crime spree that began shortly after noon when Lancaster was fatally shot, and his unmarked police auto was taken, allegedly by Ayers.
Carolynn Lancaster, who couldn’t immediately be reached by The Associated Press, told the Kansas City Star her son “was the rock of the family”. He died Monday at a hospital. His public funeral has been scheduled for 11 o’clock on Saturday morning at Children’s Mercy Park (the home of Sporting Kansas City) in Kansas City, Kansas.
