‘Captain America’ tops, ‘Money Monster’ grabs $15 million

The TriStar drama, about a disillusioned investor (O’Connell) who hijacks a financial news program and holds its host (Clooney) hostage to force him and his producer (Roberts) to expose corruption in the the financial system, did not have a realistic shot at overtaking “Captain America”.

Civil War remains strong at the box office after having the eighth-largest second weekend of all-time. It’s not a huge lead over newcomer Money Monster, which has an estimated $15 million in the #3 spot, but it’s enough.

It is a hard task to weave together multiple storylines and make something that is cohesive, and “Civil War” does a satisfactory job.

YHM and Kpopstarz has kept the readers abreast of the new developments in the field of casting for this much-awaited movie. Disney didn’t repeat that apparent mistake with Civil War, and with close to $300 million in the bank domestically, it appears to be paying off.

“Civil War” has total domestic sales over 10 days about 295.9 million dollars and it has grossed up to 941 million dollars in globally, according to industry box office tracker comScore. The Anthony and Joe Russo-directed film surpassed the $800 million and $900 million marks this weekend to overtake the global totals of Spider-Man, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Spider-Man 3 and land as the #6 highest-grossing superhero movie of all-time.

In February, Deadpool – also from Fox, the studio (and “Marvel universe”) from which the X-Men movies come – did even better than expected, and gave several nods to the X-Men films throughout. In the “Civil War” comic crossover event, we saw a team split down the middle with Captain America versus Iron Man over the Superhuman Registration Act, which is represented in the film as the Sokovia Accords.

Sony’s “Money Monster” was able to provide viable counter-programming aimed at adults, finishing well above recent forecasts. Did you notice? I sure didn’t, and I think that’s a major testament to the small miracle performed by Industrial Light & Magic. The Russos will co-produce the films and will bring along their team to take charge of everything involved in the production.

The U.S. box office’s new top five is rounded out by supernatural horror film The Darkness and director Garry Marshall’s Mother’s Day, which also features Roberts opposite Jennifer Aniston, Jason Sudeikis and Kate Hudson.

Overall, there wasn’t much that I didn’t like about this movie other than it is a little slow in a couple of spots, I didn’t like some of the transitional methods used and it could have been a little shorter, though it doesn’t necessarily need to be. All three opening weekends were considerably lower than those of its predecessor in 2014 (UK was $14.2 million for Neighbors while Australia was $4.4 million and Germany $5.3 million).
