Romney says Trump not releasing tax returns is ‘disqualifying’
If Donald Trump refuses to release his tax returns before the November election, it would be “disqualifying” to the presumptive Republican nominee’s presidential bid, former MA governor and 2012 party nominee Mitt Romney said.

An interview this morning on ABC’s Good Morning America became contentious as George Stephanopoulos pressed Donald Trump over his refusal to release his tax returns. Trump says he won t release his tax returns until an ongoing audit wraps up, raising the intriguing question: What s he hiding? “You learn very little from tax returns, but nevertheless when the audit is complete I will release”.
Trump said: ‘I don’t think they do, but I do say this: I will really gladly give them – they’re not gonna learn anything – but it’s under routine audit.
Also during the interview, Stephanopoulos pointed out that the Internal Revenue Service has said being audited is not prohibitive in terms of individual choice to make tax returns public, and that President Richard M. Nixon did so when he was being audited. The clip mentions that every single presidential nominee since 1976 has released his tax returns, before showing occasions where Trump has previously said he’d release them.
In a post on his Facebook page, Romney said that not releasing ones tax returns is “disqualifying” for a presidential candidate. So Trump’s tax return could tell how much income they made, offering fresh information about the financial health of his organization, according to Robert Kovacev, a lawyer at Steptoe & Johnson and former Justice Department Tax Division official who represents taxpayers in high-profile tax disputes with the IRS. “And I will get it done as soon as I can”.
You’ll recall that awhile back, the big mouth got a ton of publicity – which is what he always wants – by claiming Barack Obama wasn’t born in the United States.
Claiming that he runs a “clean” business, Trump said he does not have Swiss bank account and has no offshore accounts. And I have other friends that are very wealthy, they don’t even know what I’m talking about when I say I’m audited. If the tax returns are published, the public can verify whether Trump was saying the truth-or fibbing all along.
TRUMP: I don’t think they do.
Trump, for example, has repeatedly said that he will not touch Medicare or Social Security if he is elected president.
Romney, himself a multi-millionaire, said the only logical explanation for Trump’s failure to show his back taxes was that they contain “a bombshell of unusual size”.
Trump then stepped up with a surprise of his own and reversed course again Wednesday night, telling Fox News that he would, indeed, release his taxes before the elections. She said I happen to agree with you.
Others have suggested Trump may have avoided paying any taxes on his income because the tax laws allow so many deductions of owners of real estate.
