Harper drops appeal, sits 2nd game of DH
Washington Nationals’ starter Joe Ross took the mound this afternoon (1-0) with a 0.84 ERA and a.222/.300/.333 line against in 10 ⅔ innings pitched over four games, two of them starts, versus Miami.

Washington Nationals starting pitcher Max Scherzer uses an umbrella to go the field in the rain after the first baseball game of a split doubleheader against the Miami Marlins at Nationals Park, Saturday, May 14, 2016, in Washi… Washington second baseman Stephen Drew lost a popup in the sun for an error off the bat of Martin Prado to score J.T. Realmuto (three hits) and Adeiny Hechavarria, who ended the day with two hits.
Since then, Harper appeared in two games for Washington before deciding to serve his suspension, including a 6-4 win over Miami in the opener of Saturday’s twin bill.
Marlins C Jeff Mathis drove in his first run of the season with an RBI single in the sixth inning of the first game on Saturday.
Daniel Murphy has a seven-game hit streak going heading into the series finale and he’s hit safely in 14 of 16 games, going 29 for 66 (.439 AVG) with six doubles and three home runs over that stretch.
The starter for Miami in the game was Kendry Flores who had been promoted from AAA earlier in the day. At a price of just -115, the Marlins are one of the best value plays on the board today in Major League Baseball thanks to Fernandez.
Michael Taylor reached base four times with a double, single and two walks for the Nationals. However, as I wrote back in March for the site, this move made too much sense for ownership to decide that Rizzo is the ideal fit as the president/general manager for this franchise.
With Harper and three other regulars out, the Nationals managed just five hits against four Marlins pitchers in dropping the nightcap 7-1.
On top of that, the Nationals announced before game two that general manager Mike Rizzo had the option on his contract picked up – there had been a June 15 deadline – and will be with the team through at least 2018.
The Marlins led 3-0 when Flores left.
In the first game, Strasburg (6-0) struck out seven over six innings in his first start since signing a $175 million, seven-year deal this week.
The only run Fernandez allowed came on the fielding mishap in the fourth when Ryan Zimmerman drove a ball into deep right-center.
“It felt a little different”, Strasburg said. Later in the inning Fernandez lined a single to center to drive in two runs to make it 5-1 and send Ross to the showers.
All the while, Zimmerman was racing around the bases for an inside-the-park home run – what would prove to be the only scoring for the Nationals all game.
Harper, the reigning NL MVP, was suspended and fined for his behavior following an ejection in a 5-4 win over Detroit.
Cincinnati’s Eugenio Suarez hit a three-run homer to lift the Reds to a 9-4 win against Philadelphia. Harper, who by rule should not have been in the dugout after getting tossed, ran onto the field with his teammates to celebrate, pointed toward Knight and cursed at the umpire. The 23-year-old Californian was a hard-luck loser in his previous turn against the Chicago Cubs, striking out a season-high nine batters while permitting two runs on five hits over 6 2/3 innings.
