Tennessee Titans waive QB Zach Mettenberger to make room for tryout players

The Tennessee Titans brought an end to the Zach Mettenberger era Monday morning by releasing the quarterback.

Last year when the Titans drafted Marcus Mariota at #2 Mettenberger was relegated to the back-up spot, but he was called on 7 times last year including 4 starts where he managed to go winless again.

The season finale seemed to seal the deal for Mettenberger, as he was benched for Alex Tanney due to a combination of performance and a forearm injury.

Mettenberger, a sixth-round draft pick out of LSU in 2014, is 0-10 in his career as a starter. He was intercepted at least once in each of his starts. In total, he appeared in 14 games, completing 60.3 percent of his passes for 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Boykin’s release from the Panthers is interesting, as the team had just signed the cornerback two months ago. After that performance the Titans obviously thought he couldn’t be used again and signed Matt Cassel in March, making Mettenberger’s days numbered. It was obvious early on here that Ken Whisenhunt really loved The Berger. Each participated in the team’s rookie mini-camp on a tryout basis.

In addition to Mettenberger, DE Iosia Iosia, TE Kevin Greene and WR Rashon Ceaser were also waived.
