Twitter to stop counting photos and links in 140-character limit

The shift will reportedly occur in the next two weeks causing publication and brand accounts, which often tweet out story links with an accompanying image, to breathe a collective sigh of relief. Part of the attraction of Twitter is that it limits the amount of information shared in each post.

Jack Dorsey and company are going to make it easier for users to stick more stuff in their tweets.

“Twitter will soon stop counting photos and links in their 140-character limit for tweets”, a person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. Links and photos now hog as many as 20 to 25 characters each, making the process of saying what you mean, while providing visual or referenced context, a much reviled brain teaser. Bloomberg says it reached out to Twitter regarding their source’s claim, but the social media platform declined to comment on the report.

Twitter inherited its original 140 character limit from its origin as a SMS-based app. SMS text messages are limited to 160 characters, and Twitter needed to leave some extra room for user names. Users can write private messages of up to 10,000 characters.
