And now Deadline reports Cox has earned yet another major career feat with her casting in Doubt, as being part of the ensemble means she will be the first ever transgender actor playing a series regular transgender character in a broadcast television programme.

Doubt, from CBS TV Studios and Timberman/Beverly, was originally piloted by CBS last season.
In addition to Doubt, Cox will star as Dr. Frank N. Furter in the upcoming TV remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
CBS has ordered drama “Doubt” to series, bringing a cast that includes Katherine Heigl and Laverne Cox to its 2016-2017 lineup. It is also the first time that a transgender actor has been tapped to play a transgender role, giving Cox another honor to her name. It joins newly picked up dramas Bull, Training Day, Pure Genius (fka Bunker Hill) and MacGyver. It marks Heigl’s return to primetime TV after her short-lived NBC series, “State of Affairs”.

The drama is one of two married writing duo Tony Phelan and Joan Rater (Grey’s Anatomy) have in the works this season in the first year of their overall deal with CBS Television Studios – the other being the Nancy Drew reboot starring Person of Interest’s Sarah Shahi. This time, Cox is set to star alongside Katherine Heigl, who will portray a “smart, chic, successful defense lawyer at a boutque firm [who] starts to fall for her charismatic client, who may or may not be guilty of a crime”.
