‘Captain America: Civil War’ Dominates Weekend Box Office

And “Civil War” now has the third best May opening (with “The Avengers” and “Age of Ultron” are head of it).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens provided $285m (£197m), or 30% of its $936m (£648m) total.

In its second weekend, Civil War will be facing off against the quasi-financial thriller Money Monster, starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney, and the horror film The Darkness, anchored by Kevin Bacon – both open on Friday. We’d love to hear what you saw! Family audience accounted for 20 percent of the film’s overall audience. The movie cost roughly $250 million to produce.

Considering the global hype for the movie and positive reception among critics, it should come as no surprise that the film is doing well.

“Deadpool” debuted in February to a surprising $132 million in its opening weekend.

As a result, Zootopi has eclipsed Warner Bros.’ Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice by US$300,000 as the year’s second-biggest domestic grosser after Fox’s Deadpool at US$362.2 million. That film has earned $327.3m domestically to date and this weekend placed 10th with $1m.

All of this contributes to Disney’s stranglehold on the 2016 box office where, as already mentioned, it became the fastest studio to cross $1 billion.

The latest “Captain America” installment, which is the 13th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, sets up the next wave of MCU storytelling. The Marvel element is a key portion of that and one that other studios are trying to match. But the movie is also engaged in an off-screen fight that’s equally impressive.

No doubt, Marvel should be happy its new release is beating old ones, but its competition with DC may be the more important matchup. However, the fact that Civil War is a great and successful movie doesnt mean that its without its fair share of problems.
