This is not an issue that has come up in Lowndes County schools before, but the district is preparing to deal with it if it does.
Despite this argument, a number of schools continue to discriminate against trans students. “Warren has always been respectful of its students”.
The University of California, Irvine installed a gender-neutral bathroom amid the growing issue concerning the liberties of transgender students in US schools. Students are allowed to use the bathroom of their choice, he said, although some have requested more neutral facilities.
“Federal dollars cover mainly Title I for low-income kids, and IDEA, which is special education”, Griffith said.
When a transgender student – or a student who identifies with the gender opposite of that listed on his or her medical records – attends a new school, the student, the parents, and the school administration meet to discuss in advance any issues that may arise.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said the guidance “must be challenged”. “We’re going to follow law and respect what the federal government and the legislators set forth for us, but do they really understand how this is going affect us and the impact it’s going to have in our hallways?”
“A lot of this stuff you have to deal with on a case-by-case basis depending on what the student needs. This is creating an environment to highlight and to promote difference”, he said. He said the change would not be costly, since most schools have restrooms that can be easily adjusted.
“The families in America will not accept it”, Patrick said at a news conference.
Officials said they will ignore the government’s warning.
North Carolina is one of the states that is defying the administration’s interpretation of transgender rights and public accommodations – including bathrooms – under federal law.
The letter signed by the Department of Justice and Department of Education explicitly stated that “transgender students enjoy a supportive and non-discriminatory school environment”.
The Lieutenant Governor of Texas has said he’s ready to forgo federal education funding rather than comply.
Tavarus Lafever is a transgender student who identifies as a male. The administration argues that as gender expectations are tied to sex, Congress de facto acted to prevent discrimination against trans people when it passed these protections – even if trans people were not explicitly mentioned at the time. It states that upon being notified by a parent or guardian that a student wishes to assert his or her gender identity, the school must then begin treating the child in accordance with that identity.

The Valley Center and the main campus each have a gender-neutral restroom centrally located. “This guidance further clarifies what we’ve said repeatedly – that gender identity is protected under Title IX”. The statewide policy bans individuals from using public bathrooms that do not correspond to their biological sex and restricts cities from passing nondiscrimination laws.
