Captain America stays atop North American box office

The 13 films released inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe have grossed more than $10 billion worldwide, with the milestone reached after the latest box office takings for Captain America: Civil War. Avengers: Age of Ultron, which was released a year ago still leads the way with $946 million worldwide.

Money Monster, Jodie Foster’s financially tinged hostage thriller with Clooney and Roberts, debuted with $15 million – good enough for third place.

Those totals bring Civil War’s cumulative box office up to $940.9 million. “Money Monster” only carries a 56 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.

It earned US$72.6 million over the weekend, for a total of US$295.9 million in just two weeks in theatres, according to data from industry tracker Exhibitor Relations.

It also makes it the sixth biggest superhero film of all-time, behind both Avengers movies, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, and Iron Man 3.

With Captain America: Civil War playing across 4,426 locations in the United States according to Yahoo News, these numbers certainly come as no surprise.

The fourth grossing movie this weekend was Kevin Bacon and David Mazouz horror movie, The Darkness. It is a far cry from the previous Garry Marshall holiday films…and it pales in comparison to megahit Zootopia, which pulled in an estimated $2.8 million in its eleventh week for a worldwide total of $969.8 million.

And while live-action DC movies have been around as long as Marvel-based films, they aren’t enjoying the same box office success. Captain America: Civil War pulled in $179.1 million.

The best “per theater” performer was A24’s The Lobster.

Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions also generated a strong launch for Whit Stillman’s Love & Friendship, a Jane Austen adaptation starring Kate Beckinsale and Chloe Sevigny, with US$132,750 at four sites.
