Congress registers second win as Yogita Rathee wins from Munirka ward by over 700 votes.
Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ajay Maken said the results of these bypolls would provide a big surprise as the Congress would be making huge gains. A source in the Delhi Congress said the party leadership had made it clear to its local leaders that the bypolls were not only relevant to their own political survival, but they would also set tone for the future Assembly elections in other states. The results of the elections was expected to reflect the mood for the MCD elections due in 2017.
The AAP, contesting the municipal elections for the first time, claimed it would win all 13 seats. Votes will be counted from 8 am on May 17 at centres established in the 13 wards.
9:40am: – BJP’s BM Bhandari registers win from North Shalimar Bagh ward in Delhi Municipal bypolls. The party’s Anil Malik won this seat by 552 votes.
In a neck and neck fight in the by-election to 13 wards in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress have shared honours winning five wards each, reports said.
The 13 wards which went to the bypolls are Quamruddin Nagar, Shalimar Bagh (North), Ballimaran, Nawada, Vikas Nagar, Matiala, Nanakpura, Munirka, Bhati, Tehkhand, Khichripur, Jhilmil and Wazirpur. That’s precisely one of the reasons it gave tickets to experienced candidates.
