Actor Danny Trejo says ‘race problem’ caused L.A. school brawl
Actor Danny Trejo was among dozens who showed up at a school board meeting at Slymar High School in L.A. Wednesday night. According to the latest figures from the National Center for Education Statistics, 2,157 students at Sylmar High School are Latino, while just 72 are black, 44 are white and 30 are Asian or Pacific Islander. Police have not yet determined or announced what caused the fight, which is believed to have started at a school prom over the weekend before Monday’s violence.

Monday’s incident remained under investigation, with Sylmar High School Principal James Lee telling KTLA earlier this week that students involved were being disciplined.
The school district’s top official voiced disapproval of “activities that take students out of the classroom”. Some students explained that there were gang-affiliated students involved in the fight that target black students at the school, according to ABC 7.
“As head of the most diverse school district in the nation, let me be very clear: we will not tolerate targeting or violence of any kind in our campuses”, Ms. King said.
King said there would be more school police officers, administrative and support staff on the campus on May 10, along with counselors to offer emotional support. No student was taken to the hospital as a result of the fight.
Disciplinary action has been taken against the ringleaders of the brawl.

A student told NBC4 the walkout began during 1st period and was planned to remind people that Monday’s lunchtime brawl was not about race. “They’ll come up with a solution”, Trejo said to applause and cheers. “We have to walk around in groups at school because we don’t feel safe”, a male student stood up and said. “We want everybody to know that this little incident that happened at our school doesn’t define Sylmar High School”.
